The adventure begins

The road to Avelnoss
is only the beginning.

A small town can feel like the whole world, until you begin to imagine what lies beyond it.

Along the shores of Passoon, life moves to the rhythms of the lake. Beyond it are the mountain paths and the distant promise of Avelnoss, a city of color and possibility. But in a world where magic can deceive and faith can command, who gets to decide what is true?

The Second and Only Illusionist is the first novel in The Whispered War, an adult epic fantasy trilogy. It invites you into that wider world through three distinct points of view, each with a different way of seeing what is familiar and what is strange.

Adam brings a steady, practical eye to the world. Lao meets it with curiosity. Nauri looks for what is good and what might be possible. You will experience the adventure from inside their minds, sharing their questions, their judgments, and the things they find difficult to say.

Three points of view

One adventure. Three ways to see it.

Inside the minds of Adam, Lao and Nauri.

Graphic-novel portrait of Adam facing forward with a gentle expression, gray hair at his temples, a compact strong build, worn leather armor and a plain steel breastplate.

Adam

The steadfast

Adam had a life before this one. Now he lives alone, chopping firewood on a hill outside a small town.

He sleeps above buried things and plans to keep it that way.

But can the past stay buried when wicked men come for someone he’s been entrusted to protect?

Graphic-novel portrait of slender Lao glancing back over his shoulder with a subtle smirk, tousled auburn hair curling beneath his ear and a stained ivory silk shirt beneath an open blue coat, both without buttons.

Lao

The inquisitive

Lao had everything, but his curiosity overruled his reason. Now he’s homeless in a city far from home.

He longs to play music in great halls again, and he knows he’ll be loved for it. Because what’s not to love?

How will he survive being chewed alive in the maw of an unnatural beast?

Graphic-novel portrait of Nauri looking slightly upward, a very lean Black seventeen-year-old half-elf with golden-brown eyes, one loose braid and a gray wool cowl and cloak.

Nauri

The idealist

Nauri is seventeen. She works at a fish house, scrubbing slime, blood, and scales from wooden tables.

She dreams of a little home with cut flowers on a sun-drenched windowsill.

What will she do when an ancient creature is draining her blood?

Epic adventures with a human heart.

Brian Archey is the author of the forthcoming fantasy novel The Second and Only Illusionist, the first novel in The Whispered War trilogy.

I’ve had this story in my head for years, pawing at me. Sometimes with claws. I keep coming back to the gap between who we are and who other people decide we are. And in the wider world, who decides what’s true? How much do those answers depend on who has the power?

What better way to explore all that than through magic?
